Dr. Burçin TUNÇ,a Dr. N. Ahmet ERÖZENCİa
a Üroloji AD, İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Treatment modalities in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) patients aim to overcome bladder outlet obstruction. But in many studies it is shown that some of the symptomatic patients do not have outlet obstruction.
According to European Urology Association guidelines, watchful waiting can be suggested to patients with little bother. Some little life style changes like, decreasing alcohol and caffeine intake, bladder exercises to enlarge bladder capacity, preventing constipation, can be helpful in these patients.
Phytotherapeutic agents are being widespreadly used during last 15 years. Most frequently used agents are as follows; Serenoa Repens (Saw Palmetto Berry), Pygeum Afrıcanum (Afrıcan Plum), Hypoxıs Rooperı (South Afrıcan Star Grass).
Although according to some studies, phytotherapeutic agents can clinically decrease symptoms of BPH patients, and have clinical efficacy considerable to finasteride and alpha-blockers, how they show their effect is not fully understood. All of these agents need long term placebo controlled double blind randomized studies. Keywords: BPH, watchful waiting, phytotherapyTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(1):51-53
