Is There Any Role Of The Prostate Specific Antigen (psa) In The Evaluation Of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (bph) Other Than Differential Diagnosis Of Prostatic Carcinoma?
Dr. Fazıl Tuncay AKİ,a Dr. Haluk ÖZENa
aÜroloji AD, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA BPH is benign neoplasm that is prevalent among men aged >50 years. Community and practice based studies suggest that BPH is progressive disease. There is persistent deterioration in BPH symptom severity and an increase in prostate volume and risk of acute urinary retention. Prostatic carcinoma is malign disease of prostate and its incidence increases concomitantly with BPH in aging men. Serum PSA is the most useful tumor marker for prostate carcinoma. On the other hand PSA is not cancer specific. Although many factors may effect the serum PSA level, authors mainly has focused on the usefullness of PSA in discrimination prostatic carcinoma from benign conditions. It has been shown that the serum PSA is strong predictor of prostatic growth, the risk of AUR and the need for BPH related surgery. In this article, the evidence of the PSA as predictors of the natural history of BPH and the clinical response to therapeutic options is reviewed. Keywords: PSA, BPH, prostate volume, acute urinary retention, surgeryTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(1):106-114
