a Üroloji AD, Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Although transuretral resection of the prostatic tissue (TURP) is still the best treatment modality (Gold standard) for the treatment of BPH related lower urinary tract symptoms, many patients can not be treated with TURP or TURP may be an over treatment option for some of the patients. In addition, in some articles the mortality rate of TURP was reported to be as 0.2-2.5%, and the morbidity rate was also reported to be high. Because of these reasons, less mortal and morbid, minimally invasive treatment modalities are being searched.
Previously, alpha-1 blockers and/or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors have a very important place as a treatment option. And, as a comparison with minimally invasive treatment modalities, the treatment success rate is much higher. But, the number of patients who don't want to use drugs for a long period is also not less. Parallel with the technologic improvements, many minimally invasive treatment modalities are being improved for the treatment of BPH related lower urinary tract symptoms.
But, one of the most important points is the success rate of the used technique increases parallel with the degree of the invasiveness of the technique. Keywords: BPH, minimally invasive treatment modalitiesTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(1):75-81
