Laser In The Treatment Of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

a Üroloji AD, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Lower urinary tract symptoms consistent with benign prostatic obstruction become increasingly prevalent with age. Transurethral resection of the prostate is still the gold standard treatment choice for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Although transurethral resection of the prostate has been proven to reduce lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic obstruction and increase urinary flow, the procedure has some limitations and complications. With the advent of the laser technology, laser energy has been applied for treating benign prostatic obstruction and preliminary data suggest that this energy modality is effective and safe. To date, 4 types of lasers have been used to treat the prostate?neodymium (Nd):YAG, holmium (Ho):YAG, potassium titanyl phosphate:YAG and diode. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy and safety of laser prostatectomy techniques compared to transurethral resection of the prostate for symptomatic benign prostatic obstruction. Keywords: Benign prostatic hyperplasia, laser prostatectomy, transurethral resection.Turkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(1):82-86
