Open Prostatectomy
Dr. Orhan GÖĞÜŞa
a Üroloji AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Today, most of the prostatectomies for benign prostatic hyperplasia are performed by transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Although, it depends on the experience of the, surgeon when the obstructive prostate tissue is estimated to weigh more than 60-75 gr open prostatectomy may be performed. Additionally, large bladder calculi, which are not amenable to fragmentation, large diverticula of the bladder (> 3 cm), anklylosis of the hip preventing proper positioning of the patient for transurethrale resection are the other indications for open prostatectomy. The contraindications for an open prostatectomy include a small, fibrous gland, carcinoma of the prostate and prior prostatectomy. The open prostatectomy may be performed by suprapubic or retropubic procedures. As the average of these patients who undergo prostatectomy is approximately 70 years the preoperative evaluation and preparation of these patients is extremely important. The preoperative preparation, operation techniques and complications will be discussed in details throughout this review article. Keywords: Prostate, open prostatectomy, suprapubic, retropubicTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(1):99-105
