Clean Intermittent Catheterization: Is A Treatment Modality?

aÜroloji AD, Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, DENİZLİ Clean intermittent catheterization is the act of passing a catheter into the bladder in order to drain urine and removing it immediately afterwards when drainage ceased. It is performed by the patient using clean catheters. In order to ascertain the patients suitability to perform clean intermittent catheterization a thorough comparing other treatment alternatives must be made. Bladder dysfunctions suitable for clean intermittent catheterization are; Neurogenic bladder, detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia, overflow incontinence due to obstruction, augmentation cystoplasty, recurrent urethral strictures and urinary diversions. One of the major advantages of clean intermittent catheterization is the ability for the patient to regain social fredom. Furthermore catheterizable continant urinary diversions has bocome a preferable treatment option with clean intermittent catheterization. In conclusion, numerous studies have shown that clean intermittent catheterization has become one of the most valuable tools in the management of both neurogenic and non-neurogenic bladder-emptying problems.Keywords: Urinary bladder, catheterizationTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(5):23-27
