Urinary Retention In Women
Dr. Ceyhun ÖZYURTa
aÜroloji AD, Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Urinary retention is sudden onset of inability to void or presence of important amount of postmicturitional residual urine. Mainly it is a problem of men, prevalence of urinary retention in females is extremely low. In females it is seen predominantly between the ages 20-24. In the majority of the cases an etiological factor is present. Labor, gynecological operations and other pelvic surgeries are commonly seen etiological factors, however in approximately 35% of patients urinary retention occur spontaneously, no predisposing factor can be found. As in other voiding dysfunctions, the main purpose of diagnostic and evaluative workup is to find out underlying etiology. Prognosis is worse in patients with spontaneous urinary retention, in these patients the probability of returning of bladder function is low. The purpose of the treatment is to relieve symptoms and to treat or to prevent the negative effects of retention and high pressure storage. Treatment of underlying cause, clean intermittent catheteterization, continous catheteterization, sacral neuromodulation are commonly used treatment alternatives. Keywords: Urethra, bladder, urinary retentionTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(5):56-60
