Nephron Sparing Surgery In Renal Cell Carcinoma
Dr. Ziya KIRKALIa
aÜroloji AD, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Renal cell carcinoma constitutes 3% of all adult solid tumors and its incidence is rising. The presentation of tumors has changed during the course of time and so did the surgicl approch. While most patinets presented with large size and locally advanced tumors in the past, today most of the tumors are small and detected incidentally. Although there are no well conducted prospective randomised studies showing equivalance of nephron sparing surgery to radical nephrectomy, long term oncologic results of retrospective series demonstrate a similar duration of survival. Therefore nephron sparing surgery has been the standard treatment for those early stage samll localised tumors. The overwhelming technical advances in minimal invasive surgery has caused laparoscopic methods to be currently popular. Ablative technologic advances are currently experimental and used laparoscopically. However; it appears that these will be used more in the future in a minimally invasive fashion, maybe percutaneous or even extracorporeally. Keywords: Renal neoplasms, renal cell carcinoma, surgery, nephron sparing surgeryTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(9):12-15
