Prostate Specific Antigen And Prostate Biopsy In The Diagnosis Of Prostate Cancer
Dr. Saadettin Yılmaz ESKİÇORAPÇI,a Dr. Haluk ÖZENa
aÜroloji AD, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA PSA is a glycoprotein responsible in the liquefaction of the semen. The elevation of serum PSA has more diagnostic value than the digital rectal examination and lesion detected by TRUS. Nonetheless, the diagnostic potential of PSA is limited because of low specificity. There are many studies in the literature to increase the specificity of PSA. Some studies about volume based parameters (PSA density, transitional zone PSA density), age adjusted PSA values and elevation rate of PSA (PSA velosity) and many other had been performed to increase the speficity of PSA. The molecular forms of PSA had been used with the invention of new immunological tests. In this review, the diagnostic potential of PSA and above mentioned markers were discussed.
Suspicious digital rectal examination and elevation of PSA above 4 ng/ml (2.5 ng/ml, recently) in a man with 10 years life expectancy are absolute indications for the prostate biopsy for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. In this article, developing prostate biopsy techniques in recent years, TRUS guided prostate biopsy and repeat biopsy and the complications are reviewed. Keywords: PSA, prostate, biopsy, sextant biopsy and diagnosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(9):34-39
