Targeted Therapy In Prostate Cancer
Dr. Levent N. TÜRKERİa
aÜroloji AD, Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL The main goal of the targeted therapy is to correct the functional abnormalities of the genes that promote oncogenesis and tumor progression, thus change the course of the disease. In contrast to the majority of cytotoxic chemotherapies, targeted therapies are generaly cytostatic. The aim of therapy with these agents is to convert the disease from a progressive process that leads to death to a chronic disease state. Addition of advanced cytotoxic agents or other treatment modalities to the management of disease during this additional time period may allow control of the disease to a great extent. It is clear that this form of therapy is still in its infancy and a great deal of research and development is required. However, it is certainly true that we entered a brand new era of therapy of the malignant diseases in general and consequently the urogenital tumors that we are dealing with. It is the great hope of urooncologists to witness the transition of progress in to effective management. Keywords: Targeted therapy, neoplasms, urogenitalTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2005, 1(9):71-76
