Because of low morbidity rate, PNL has been the first choice of treatment in the majority of renal stone diseases. Central to the success of any endourologic procedure is the establishment of a safe and reliable percutaneous access into the renal collecting systems. As with any interventional procedure, the creation of a percutaneous access tract requires imaging equipment for guidance. The availability of high-quality C-arm configurations of fluoroscopy equipment allows the monitoring of essential manipulation. Primary fluoroscopic guidance for percutaneous access creation is still the preferred technique. The widely use of fluoroscopic guidance has increased the radiation exposure of urologists, patients and the other operating room personel. Protectives measurres should be applied in each procedure. In this article, it is aimed to understand the fundamentals of radiation and radiation safety brieflyKeywords: Kidney stone, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, radiation, radiation protectionTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(4):6-9
