Dr. Semih Yaşar SARGIN,a Dr. Bekir VOYVODAa
aÜroloji Kliniği, Türkiye Yüksek İhtisas Hastanesi, ANKARA Staghorn calculi are branched stones that occupy a large portion of the collecting system. Typically, they fill the renal pelvis and branch into several or all of the calices.
Staghorn stones may be a causative of recurrent urinary tract infections, sepsis and renal paranchimal injury and thus they must not be left untreated.
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) has become the first choice of treatment for staghorn stones. Stone-free rates with pnl in staghon stones were stated as 70-90% in the literature.
Comparing with open surgery, PNL is a valuable treatment method for staghorn stones with very few complication rates such as bleeding and shorter hospital stay .
In the 2004 AUA guideline on staghorn calculi, PNL is the first stage of the treatment of staghorn stones. Keywords: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy, staghorn calculiTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(4):23-27
