aÜroloji AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Lymph node involvement is associated with increased risk of local recurrence and disease progression in urologic tumors. Lymphadenectomy provides important staging information and it may even be therapeutic in a select subset of patients with micrometastatic disease. Although radiologic imaging can detect lymphadenopathy, its sensitivity and specificity rates for diagnosing malignant nodal involvement are unacceptably low. Thus, surgical staging is often necessary by lymphadenectomy. Laparoscopy has gained momentum in the management of urologic tumors. Several recent publications of open surgical series have focused on the extent of lymphadenectomy in urologic oncology. As such it is pertinent to question whether laparoscopic techniques can secure lymphadenectomy templates comparable to open surgery. Herein the current status of laparoscopic lymphadenectomy is reviewed in the management of various genitourinary tumors, specifically testis, bladder, prostate and penile. Keywords: Lymphadenectomy, laparoscopy, urologic tumorsTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(4):41-46
