The History Of Renal Transplantation
Dr. Bülent OKTAYa
aÜroloji AD, Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, BURSA The idea of changing people’s weak or deficient organs has existed since the times before common era. However, the realisation of organ transplantation only happened in the beginnings of the nineteenth century. The first times were not succesful. First the development of surgical stitch systems, and second the comprehension of immunity, accelerated the development of organ transplantation, enabling the transplantation of several solid organs. Although initially done between living relatives, with the increase in intensive care units and the solidification of the notion of brain death, kidney transplantation is now also done from cadaver sources. Right now in developed countries the number of cadaver transplantations is larger than those from live donors. Keywords: Transplantation, kidneyTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(21):1-2
