Brain Death
Dr. İbrahim BORAa
aNöroloji AD, Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, BURSA The concept of brain death and guidelines for its clinical determination were originally proposed by Ad Hoc Committee of the Harvard Medical School Faculty in 1968. The clinical diagnosis of brain death has never been easy for most physicians, including neurologists and neurosurgeons.
Brain death is defined as irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brainstem.
Diagnosis of brain death will not only prevent long stay in intensive care unit and decrease the cost but also will increase the chance of finding donor for organ transplantation. Patient should be in deep coma, without brainstem reflexes and with positive apnea test. There won’t be spontaneous respiration so the patient will be on mechanical ventilation. Etiological reason should be found and reversible conditions should be excluded so that the condition will be shown to be irreversible. Keywords: Apnea test, brain stem reflexes, brain deathTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(21):13-17
