Cross-over Kidney Transplantation

aİzmir Tepecik Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Organ Nakli Merkezi, İZMİR Due to organ shortage, number of patients is gradually increasing on the waiting list in our country; as it is all over the world. Transplant centers have been searching solutions for this problem. One of these solutions is exchange kidney transplantation. Especially in the countries in which brain death is not acceptable and cadaveric donors are insufficient, this solution seems to be favorable for patients having living donors, but can not have the transplantation procedure performed for having discordance in blood types and leukocyte cross-matches. By taking the consent of both families and crossing the donors, 2 patients can have the chance to have the kidney transplantation.
Recently, the success rate in related and unrelated live transplantation has increased with the help of the new generation immunosuppressive drugs. Likewise, the survival rate of exchange transplantations is found to be similar to those with live related transplantations.
Considering the advantages, like the shorter waiting time and longer kidney survival of the exchange kidney transplantation program to cadaveric kidney transplantation and the contribution in prevention of organ trade, exchange kidney transplantation is a good alternative for patients having living donors and can not have transplantation procedures performed. Keywords: Kidney transplantation, living donor, exchange kidney transplantation, organ tradeTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(21):31-34
