Laparoscopic Urology: History And Evolution
Dr. Ali Rıza KURALa
aÜroloji AD, İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Laparoscopy was first used in Gynecology, and later in General Surgery and it became a standart procedure for cholecystectomy. Urologists have been familiar with endoscopic procedures such as TURP, TUR Bladder, Ureteroscopy and Percutaneous Renal Surgery for many years but it took some time for them to start practicing laparoscopy. The usage of Video-Endoscopy is the most important factor for development of laparoscopic urology. In the early stages, it was used only for simple procedures such as varicocelectomy, renal cyst decortication, undescended testis. Meanwhile, the development of techniques in hemostasis, production of better cameras and opticals, spreading of stiching and knotting techniques, improvement in organ entrapment bag made it possible for every open urological surgical procedures to be also practiced laparoscopically in the new millenium. The development of robotic surgery since the early 2000`s, has moved laparoscopic urological surgery to another field. Keywords: Urology; laparoscopy; historyTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(4):1-3
