During this period introduction of hand assisted laparoscopy (HAL) has made significant contribution to the progression of laparoscopic urology. HAL transfers the advantage of open surgery to laparoscopy field. HAL addresses many of the perceived problems with standard laparoscopy. It facilitates wide dissection and incision to place the hand port enables intact specimen removal. It reduces operative time for most surgeons and provides more rapid control of vascular injury. Transperitoneal HAL warrants completion of the difficult procedure in a safe manner with the advantages of minimal invasive surgery. It technically simplifies the procedure, which allows even urologists with a low-volume practice to develop and maintain skills. HAL also allows experienced surgeons to perform more complicated laparoscopic procedures. HAL is used for radical nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, donor nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy and bilateral nephrectomy. In this section, devices used for hand assisted laparoscopic renal surgery, technique, advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Keywords: Laparoscopy; nephrectomy; handTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(4):54-58
