Complications And Prevention In Urological Laparoscopy
Dr. Can ÖBEK,a Dr. Faruk YENCİLEKa
aÜroloji AD, Yeditepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Laparoscopy was initially used as a diagnostic tool in urologic surgery. However, nowadays it is used for almost any surgical procedure including the most difficult ones. Therefore, both the incidence and the variation of laparoscopic complications in urology have increased. The most important complications specific for laparoscopy are the ones associated with access and carbon dioxide insufflation. Visceral injury (most commonly intestines) and vascular injury may occur due to errors during access or dissection. The best way of managing laparoscopic complications is prevention. Nevertheless, when they occur, early recognition (during surgery) is the key in decreasing morbidity and mortality. The experience of the laparoscopic surgeon appears to be the most important determining factor for the incidence and fate of complications. Laparoscopic surgeons need a lengthy training (preferably one year) prior to performing surgery. Patient selection and pre operative planning would decrease the incidence of complications as in open surgery. Keywords: Laparoscopy; complications; urologyTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(4):109-116
