Sexual Dysfunctions And Epidemiology
Dr. Ahmet SOYLU,a Dr. Y. Can BAYDİNÇa
aÜroloji ABD, İnönü Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, MALATYA Sexual dysfunction is an important health problem detoriating the quality of life of increasing number of elderly people worldwide. Male sexual dysfunction could be classified into three main groups as interest/desire disorders, ejaculation disorders together with erectile dysfunction and orgasmic disorders. There are a good number of epidemiological studies utilizing different methods and assessment instruments worldwide. These differences make the evaluation of incidence and prevalences and comparison with one another difficult. Although there are many prevalence studies, the number of studies investigating the incidence of sexual dysfunction is limited. Even though there are variations among the findings in these studies, the incidence increases with each decade. The prevalence of sexual interest/desire disorders increases significantly after the age of 60 and this issue needs new research. Erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual dysfunction disorder investigated epidemiologically in many parts of the world and in different ethnical groups. In these studies the relation of erectile dysfunction with many factors like age, current illnesses, medications, medical and surgical treatment methods, socio-economic level etc, have been evaluated. In spite of the differences in the measurements and ratios of erectile dysfunction prevalences, all studies demonstrate an increase in the prevalence and severity of the erectile dysfunction with advancing age. Among the ejaculation and orgasmic disorders, premature ejaculation is the most common sexual dysfunction in younger patients. While the sexual dysfunction and its incidence increase with age, the rate of regular sexual activity also decreases. There are many risk factors that could cause sexual dysfunction. Many factors like aging (being the most common), endocrine and hormonal disorders, diabetes, coronary artery disease, hypertension, neurological diseases, chronic diseases, smoking, surgical trauma, urinary system diseases, medications, disorders in general health status, obesity and sedentary living-life style are among the important risk factors for the sexual dysfunction. Keywords: Sexual dysfunction, epidemiologyTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(38):1-8
