Female Sexual Dysfunction: An Update

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is multifactorial and multidimensional problem combining biological, psychological and interpersonal determinants. Unfortunately, the pathophysiology of FSD is not completely understood and efficient treatment modalities could not be developed. The present article defines and classifies FSD and reviews the pathophysiology of insufficient clitoral erection, vaginal lubrication and engorgement, the role of aging, hormonal and vascular factors in female sexual dysfunction. Furthermore, FSD related to stress urinary incontinence and/or pelvic organ prolapse and to their surgical treatment is discussed.Keywords: Female, sexual dysfunction, physiologicalTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(38):57-62
