Erectile Dysfunction: A New Cardiovascular Risk Predictor
Dr. M. Serdar KÜÇÜKOĞLUa
aİstanbul Üniversitesi Kardiyoloji EnstitüsüTıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Endothelial nitric oxide production in the corpus cavernosum is involved in the maintainance of penile erection. Pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction and erectile dysfunction seem to be intimately linked to the physiological actions of nitric oxide. Both endothelial and erectile dysfunction are common in individuals with multiple cardiovascular risk factors and both are found to be the predictors of cardiovascular disease. Erectile dysfunction can be detected by clinical questioning and could potentially be used as an independent predictor of cardiovascular risk and be a treatment target for risk factors. Life style modification improves both endothelial and erectile dysfunction and drugs that improve endothelial dysfunction seem to improve erectile dysfunction. Phosphodiesteraz 5 inhibitors which improve erectile and endothelial function may have potential cardiac implications. Keywords: Erectile dysfunction, cardiovascular diseaseTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(38):63-67
