The Role Of Sex Therapist And Significance Of Interdisciplinary Cooperation And Integration In Treatment Of Sexual Dysfunction
Dr. Mehmet Zihni SUNGURa
aPsikiyatri ABD, Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Human sexual function comprises a complicated interaction of psychosocial and biophysiological components. A holistic approach therefore should consider all aspects of human sexual behaviour. The introduction of effective pharmocological treatments although welcome for many reasons, has lead many professionals to a "quick fix" approach, restoring a spesific physiological function rather than getting involved with those psychological or relational factors that underlies or aggravates the presenting sexual problem. As treatment of sexual dysfunction is not under the monopoly of a certain discipline, different disciplines need not be alternatives but complementers, leading clients to access to the benefits of an integrated type of approach. Therefore a closer liaison and development of a consensus on minimal standarts of assessment are needed. It ıs thus hoped that in future there will be a much closer colloboration between those therapists experienced in psychologically based treatment approaches and those such as andrologists who largely provide only physical and pharmacological treatments. This paper discusses the significance of cooperation and integration between different disciplines and the role of sex therapists in treatment of sexual dysfunction. Keywords: X therapist, sexual dysfunction, interdisciplinary cooperation and integrationTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(38):68-72
